One of them, forexample, was the great Italian artist, Leonardo Da Vinci. In the sixteenthcentury he made designs for machines that would fly, but they were never built. Throughout history, other less famous men hadwanted to fly. An example was a man in England 800 years ago. He made apair of wings from chicken feathers. Then he fixed them to his body and jumpedinto air from a tall building. He did not fly very far. Instead, he fell to theground and broke every bone in his body. The first real steps took place in France, in 1783. Two brothers, theMontgolfiers, made a very large "hot air balloon". They knew that hotair rises. Why not fill a balloon with it? The balloon was made of cloth andpaper. In September of that year, the King and Queen of France came tosee the balloon. They watched it carry the very first air passengers into thesky. The passengers were a sheep and a chicken. We do not know how they felt aboutthe trip. But we do know that the trip lasted eight minutes and that theanimals landed safely. Two months later, two men did the same thing. They roseabove Paris ina balloon of the same kind. Their trip lasted twenty-five minutes and theytraveled about eight kilometers. I received this bit of information after I askedGabriele to put his dirty socks in the basket. And I get no sympathy from mymother, who says, "You let him have his way from the beginning." It's true. I have always asked Gabriele's opinion, found out how he feltabout things - treated him as my peer, not my child. And what have I got frommy troubles? A lot of back talk. At least I'm not alone; it's a complaint heardamong parents across the country. It'snot just that we're confused by the contradictory advice offered in parentingbooks. The fact is, in an effort to break away from how we were raised - to trysomething more liberal than our parents' "do it because I say so"approach - our generation has gone too far. "Today's parents want to beyoung, so they try to be friends with their children," says Kathy Lynn, aparenting educator. "Whenit comes to discipline, our society has gone from one extreme to theother," says Ron Moorish, a behavior specialist. "We used to use thestrap, to intimidate. Then we had permissiveness, and now it's about givingchildren choices and allowing them to learn from their own experiences." Realdiscipline, says Moorish, is about teaching. "By correcting our childrenwhen they do something wrong, we teach them how to behave properly," hesays. But this only works, he emphasizes, if parents regain their position ofauthority. Children will always be children. The key is for parents to chooseto take the time to guide and teach their kids. RitaMunday, a mother of four children, couldn't believe the dramas that played outin the children's shoe store she operated. She often saw children insist onhaving the high-priced, brand-name shoes. And even when the mother didn't wantto spend the money, she would give in when the kid started acting up andthrowing shoes around. RhondaRadice, Munday's younger colleague, is one parent who has bucked the trend -and is proud of it. "I don't negotiate with them. You can't. I've seenparents come into the store and bribe their children to behave. You shouldn'thave to buy love and respect." (6)、The author'sway of treating her son ____________.
